Age and growth studies are necessary for the population assessment of species under fishing exploitation. Rhizoprionodon terraenovae and Sphyrna tiburo are the most frequent species in catches by artisanal fisheries in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The age and growth of both species were estimated by reading growth bands in vertebrae of organisms with sizes between 33.7 to 103.5 cm total length (TL) for R. terraenovae and 28.2 to 112.1 cm TL for S. tiburo. The precision index (APE) and coefficient of variation (CV) between two readers were 9.1% and 6.44% for R. terraenovae and 7.9% and 5.59% for S. tiburo. The edge and the marginal increment analyses did not define the growth bands formation periodicity of the two species. Since it was not possible to determine that periodicity, it was assumed that it was annual for both species, according to other studies. The Gompertz model was selected using the Akaike information criterion for both species. Individual growth parameters for combined sexes of R. terraenovae were L∞ = 104.6 cm., k = 0.52/year, L0 = 48 cm., while for female S. tiburo they were L∞= 113 cm., k = 0.49/years, L0 = 39 cm., and for males they were L∞= 83.6 cm., k = 0.79/years, L0 = 40.2 cm. The age range for R. terraenovae was 0-7 years for both sexes, while for S. tiburo was 0-8 years for females and 0-5 years for males. This study is the first to estimate the age and growth parameters of both species by reading growth bands in vertebrae in the southeast of the GOM, which will serve as the basis for population assessments. | |
